1/Types of publications

Written paper types

Studies are academic articles based on original research, addressing particular issues empirically, theoretically and/or methodologically. In other words, studies may investigate various concepts relevant to Communication and Media Studies, they may corroborate upon accepted or innovative methodological procedures, or, they may examine particular phenomena through the analysis of empirical data. The recommended length of these articles is 6,000 – 8,000 words, including footnotes and references, with an abstract of up to 150 words, up to 10 keywords, and brief information about the author(s) (up to 100 words for each author).

Book reviews introduce and critically evaluate new books relevant to the field of Communication and Media Studies. The author(s) may choose to review one monograph, an edited volume, or several books. Book reviews provide a summary of the publication(s) and then use this as a basis for their critical evaluation. The recommended length of a book review is 2000 – 4000 words, including footnotes and references.

Interviews introduce inspiring personalities within the field of media and communication, including both academics and practitioners. These could, for instance, be researchers, educators, journalists, editors, and media managers. The recommended length of the interview is 3000 – 4000 words, including footnotes and
references. Interviews also include brief information about the interviewee.

Exceptionally, the editor-in-chief may consider other formats (e.g., conference reports, polemics, A/V essay reviews, …). For queries, please send an email to medialnistudia@fsv.cuni.cz.

Audio/visual essays

Audio/visual essays (or A/V essays) are formal and structured pieces of work with a clear narrative that creatively deploy audio/visual modes of communication. Subgenres include audiovisual essays, film essays, video essays, and sound essays. They are always accompanied by a contextualising document, which is a written academic text that discusses the research questions/objectives, theoretical framework, and methodology of the A/V work (and that includes bibliographic and filmographic references).

2/Languages

For written articles, the journal accepts submissions in English, Czech and Slovak. English-friendly measures and English title, abstract and keywords are required for written submissions in Czech and Slovak. For audio/visual essays, any language is accepted (although English-friendly measures are required for audio/visual essays that do not use English; for more information about this, see the Detailed A/V Submission Guidelines).

3/Submission process

All submissions should use the journal’s Electronic Editorial System (https://ms.vedeckecasopisy.cz/).
After receiving a submission, the editor-in-chief will acknowledge its reception.

For reviewed written papers: Studies

Submissions aimed for peer review (which we call “studies”) should be delivered in two versions: an original version and a blinded (anonymised) version. The editor-in-chief sends blinded copies for review, so please make sure to omit all references to author identities (names, institutional affiliations, …). Please ensure that also the file’s metadata have been removed.
The original and the blinded version should be accompanied by a cover letter, with the author(s)’s full name(s), institutional affiliation(s), and the contact email address(es).
